Safety — What You Need to Watch in DIY
In DIY, the biggest challenge isn't the building itself — it's meeting the safety standards that a certified product meets automatically.
Rung spacing 12 – 12.5 cm (Pikler Society Berlin standard). Too narrow — the child can't place its foot properly. Too wide — small legs can't reach from rung to rung.
Stability. The Pikler must not tip over under sideways pressure. Rule of thumb: a 25-kg child should be able to pull up on it without it wobbling. Test this before the child plays with it alone.
Splinter-free finish. Every rung, every edge must be sanded so a small hand can run over it with full pressure without catching. That means usually three rounds of sanding with different grits.
Joints — screws or wooden dowels? Wooden dowels look nicer and have no metal exposure, but hold less well under active climbing. Screws are the safer choice — countersunk, rounded and possibly covered with screw caps.
Wood choice. Pine and spruce are cheap but too soft for intensive use — they give way over time. Beech is the right choice for a climbing piece that should outlive several children.
Safety finish. If the child might lick the wood (and they will), the finish must be food-grade. Standard hardware-store wood lacquer often isn't. Better leave it unfinished or use beeswax.
What many DIY tutorials leave out: a DIY Pikler is not a certified toy under DIN EN 71. That means no official safety assessment. For home use that's fine — but if you ever want to resell or gift the Pikler, that matters to know.

Time saved, immediately usable. Order → delivery → 30-minute assembly → child climbs. In DIY: 2 weekends, sourcing tools, possibly rework. When the child wants to climb "now", that's a real argument.
Modular expandability. Industrially made systems like Loopo are designed so you can later combine them with a slide, bridge, wall bars — everything fits cleanly. With DIY you'd have to plan and build each extension fresh.
Foldable / Modular — DIY or Buy?
Foldable Pikler: technically possible, but DIY-demanding. You need hinges that fit exactly and a secure lock. In most DIY attempts, the folding mechanisms get wobbly after a few months. With industrial models the mechanism is thought-through and lasts.
Modular system (Pikler + slide + bridge + arch): here buying has a clear advantage. Industrially made sets use one unified connection system. In DIY you'd have to build every element and also make sure the dimensions match perfectly. That's ambitious — and often fails.
